Canyon in Madeira

Córrego das Terras D’além

Intermediate · v3a1 II

Rappels: 12 · Max waterfall: 44 m · Min rope: 45 m

A short coastal canyon that rewards those who fight through the approach. It makes a good rainy-day alternative: from the first rappel onwards it is really beautiful, with a nice flow after rain, and the entry into the Ribeira Funda is very spectacular.

Current status

As of April 2025

Beautiful from R1 onward with good flow after rain; gear good except one loose bolt; access still bramble-choked; the road is blocked, so parking is reached via the exit inside the main tunnel; R6 is hard to spot; a guided-rappel anchor is available on the final waterfall.

Season and flow

Weak in late April 2021; a nice flow in mid-April 2025 after heavy rain.

Anchors and re-equipment

The canyon was re-equipped in 2014 and all anchors were then in good order, with rockfall at R2 requiring the rebelay to be cleaned. In April 2021 the first anchor was missing: a rope end was left and an anchor needs to be replaced before reaching the Ribeira Funda. The first rappel goes from the large boulder on the left; at the second waterfall the first two anchors are well back and two more are just beyond the right-bank ridge on a large boulder; the rest are easy to find except the last piton. As of April 2025 the equipment is in good condition apart from one loose bolt. R6 is quite hidden and overgrown, coloured like its surroundings, high on the left where you would expect it. There is an anchor for a guided rappel on the last waterfall.

Access and exit

Access: the main difficulty. Brambles are the recurring problem. The access has been full of bramble since at least April 2021. The path from Funda is a little hard to find and overgrown with thorns in places; in March 2024 the first 100 m in the ravine were an hour-long battle against brambles, cleared with two machetes: from the forest onward the path is clear. In April 2025 the path was still difficult at times, with 1.5 m of bushes to cut through before the first rappel. Parking: you can still park at the indicated spot, but because the road is blocked you must take the exit inside the main tunnel to reach it (it is unclear whether non-locals are allowed), and the walk to the canyon is much longer than expected.

Official notes

At R2 some stones fall; the rebelay must be cleaned before use.

Anchors, flow and access change with every storm and every winter. Treat the current status as a snapshot and check the latest conditions before any descent.
