Canyon in Madeira
Córrego do Pau Branco
Intermediate · v3a1 I
Rappels: 11 · Max waterfall: 55 m · Min rope: 55 m
A canyon of little interest. The stream bed is cluttered with fallen trees and rocks in the line of descent, and there is nothing to lift it above the ordinary.
Current status
As of February 2016Dry until R8, many trees and rocks in the descent line, not worth doing. Conditions have not been confirmed in the last decade.
Season and flow
Practically dry: weak in late October 2014, and in February 2016 there was no running water at all until R8.
Anchors and re-equipment
As of October 2014 anchors existed only at R1, R7 and R11, and the R11 anchor was in poor condition because the tree supporting it had fallen; that rappel had to be done further to the right than the original location. Expect to rig natural anchors everywhere else.
Official notes
The canyon is practically dry. There are many trees and rocks that hinder progression.
Anchors, flow and access change with every storm and every winter. Treat the current status as a snapshot and check the latest conditions before any descent.
