Canyon in Madeira
Ribeira do Poço
Unclassified · -
Rappels: 6 · Max waterfall: 12 m · Min rope: 15 m
An easy canyon whose main problems are landslides and a collapsing exit route rather than the descent itself. In July 2015 the flow was normal, all equipment was present (single-point anchors) and there were large landslides in the middle of the canyon. In February 2019 there were signs of old landslides, which made some of the toboggans inadvisable.
Current status
As of August 2024The exit levada from the power plant is impassable near the canyon's exit dam after fires and landslides; an alternative via two waterfalls below the dam and a path to the Encumeada tunnel seems feasible; gates at the plant may be locked.
Anchors and re-equipment
Single-point anchors (2015). In February 2019 R3 could not be found and the drop was rappelled from a tree on the right bank.
Access and exit
Exit and access problems. In March 2015 a landslide had completely filled the final pool at the last waterfall (the dam), and the exit levada had also collapsed, leaving a somewhat exposed provisional trail. In February 2019 the levada trail after the last waterfall was blocked by a slide; the alternative was to rappel the waterfall below the stone bridge off a tree (E17) and, about 15 m lower, climb a tributary on the right bank up to the Levada do Norte. In August 2024 the exit path from the power plant had many new gates at the plant, the levada was seriously affected by the fires with fallen and burnt trees and many landslides, and the last metres before the canyon's exit dam were 100% impassable. It appears possible instead to descend two more waterfalls below the dam, walk a bit in the riverbed and pick up another path that reaches the Encumeada tunnel in 5 minutes. Two gates at the power plant were locked on the return but are climbable.
Anchors, flow and access change with every storm and every winter. Treat the current status as a snapshot and check the latest conditions before any descent.
